What is Managerial Economics?

Managerial Economics goes beyond the limits of traditional economics and business majors, blending a thorough grounding in economic theory with business knowledge and applications.

The program provides an in-depth exposure to:

  • economics and quantitative methods
  • problem-solving strategies
  • critical thinking and effective communication
  • practical knowledge, skills, and experience

The real-world focus of this major provides ideal preparation for transition into the business world and students will develop valuable skills and strengths that lead to promising careers in the public and private sectors. 

Managerial Economics majors have entered careers in every area of business and industry, including marketing, analysis, consulting, financial services, accounting, entrepreneurship, real estate, and government.  

Many Managerial Economics graduates have entered advanced degree programs in business management (MBA), accounting (MPAc), and law.

First-Year Orientation - 2016

  • Find information about the First-Year Orientation here: Orientation and register for Orientation through MyAdmissions.   
  • New undergraduate students, who do not register for classes during summer Orientation, will have registration information sent to your UC Davis email address.
  • PASS 2 Appointments are August 22-September 2.  This is when you can add yourself to class wait-lists if necessary.

Advising

If you miss the First-Year Orientation, staff advisors are available for individual 1/2-hour advising appointments as follows:

  • July 25 through September 15 from 10:30-noon and 1:15-2:45pm.
  • Fall quarter begins Monday, September 19; instruction begins Wednesday, September 21.

Online appointments must be made at least 24 hours in advance.

Major Requirements - first-year students admitted after Fall 2015

Major English Requirement (8 units)

NOTE:  This is in addition to the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences 8 unit requirement (see ).

Communication (CMN) 1 or 3 (4 units)  NOTE:  CMN 1 counts for both major & college requirements

Preparatory Requirement (39-41 units)

  • Accounting: Management (MGT) 11A and 11B (8 units)
  • Business Law:  Agricultural & Resource Economics (ARE) 18 (4 units)
  • Calculus: Mathematics (MAT) 16A, 16B, and 16C (recommended), or 17A and 17B, or 21A and 21B (8-9 units)
  • Computer Science: Choose one course from: Plant Sciences (PLS) 21 (recommended), Engineering Computer Science (ECS) 10, 15, or 30 (3-4 units)
  • Economics: Microeconomics (ECN) 1A and Macroeconomics (ECN) 1B (8 units)
  • Statistics: Statistics (STA) 13 and 103 (8 units)

Depth Subject Matter (52 units)

NOTE: Courses taken to satisfy core and restricted electives must be taken for a letter grade.

  • Required Core Courses: Agricultural and Resource Economics (ARE) 100A, 100B, 106, 155 and Economics (ECN) 101 (20 units)
  • Restricted Electives (minimum 32 units) - Choose at least one option:
    • Business Economics: choose at least 16 units from ARE 107, 112, 118, 119, 136, 157, 171A, 171B. Remaining units from above list or ARE 115A, 115B, 120, 121, 130, 132, 138, 139, 140, 143, 144, 145, 146, 150, 156, 175, 176, 194HA/HB, ECN 115A, 115B, 121A, 121B, 151A, 151B, 160A, 160B.
    • International Business Economics:  Choose at least 20 units from ARE 107, 115A, 115B, 138, 139, 146, 165, ECN 115A, 115B, 160A, 160B, 171.  Remaining units from above list or ARE 130, 171A, 171B, 175, 176, ECN 121A, 121B, ESP 175, POL 130.
    • Environmental and Resource Economics: ARE 175 and 176 (8 units), choose at least 20 units from ARE 107, 120, 132 138, 140, 145, 146, 150, 156, ECN 125,130, Environmental Science and Policy (ESP) 168A, 168B, 178. Remaining units from above list or ESP 160, 161, 163, 165, 167, 171, 172, 173, Environmental Toxicology (ETX) 138 or additional units from upper division courses in ARE and/or ECN.
    • Agribusiness Economics: Choose at least 16 units from ARE 107, 120, 121, 130, 132, 138, 139, 140, 145, 150. Remaining units from above list, or upper division courses in ARE and/or ECN.

NOTE:  ARE 142, 147/M, ECN 102, 134, 140, and 162 do not count in any option.

Students not yet declared in the Managerial Economics major

  • Students may not change majors until after successfully completing at least one quarter at UC Davis (must be in good academic standing).
  • The first step to changing majors is to meet with a Managerial Economics Peer Advisor to develop an academic study plan (no appointment needed).
  • Students in good academic standing may submit a Change of Major petition online in OASIS:
    • Logon with your UCD LoginID and Kerberos password.
    • Click the “Forms & Petitions” tab, then “Submit a New Form.”
    • Complete and submit both the Change of Major petition and Academic Plan.  Change of Major petitions not accompanied by online academic plans will not be approved.
