Izaac Ornelas is our 2019 WAEA Outstanding Senior
May 16, 2019
This award recognizes outstanding undergraduate seniors who have achieved academic excellence at their institution and are expected to make important contributions to western agricultural, resource, and/or environmental economics in their career.
After graduation Izaac plans to work in the industry for a few years to learn what the agricultural industry is like, as well as sharpen the skills he has been working on as an undergraduate student. He hopes to employ the techniques (especially statistical/econometrical techniques) he learned at UC Davis to help the company he is working for and the customers he will assist. Additionally, Izaac plans on using the managerial skills he leanred to eventually become a manager in his field.
Izaac was nominated for the award by Professor Taylor, who had this to say:
“Are there enough people going into skilled agricultural occupations to meet the food demands of a growing global population? Izaac tackled that question in his Honors Thesis. He used data on more than 9 million people interviewed by the American Community Survey (ACS). He found that agricultural degrees are becoming more important in predicting who goes into highly skilled agricultural jobs over time. He also found that students’ likelihood of getting agricultural degrees is increasing. Izaac’s work points to the importance of our universities in meeting the skill demands of an ever more technology-intensive agricultural sector.”
