Ashkun Zaker became an Aggie in the fall of 2000 as a declared bio-chemistry major, but soon traded Chem 2A for Econ 1A and made his way over to SS&H to talk with Elizabeth about changing his major. Wanting to spend every moment he could around SS&H before and after class, Ashkun joined as a Peer Advisor for two years during which he met his future wife Neelam when she came in to make a study plan. After graduating, he worked in investment banking but in time realized that his real passion was to serve the underserved and to use business models to drive positive social impact, so he decided that it was time to make a complete career switch into social good. An MBA from the right school was in order, one that embraced the growing demand to educate a new wave of business leaders to tackle society’s biggest challenges. Along the way, he made a stop in San Francisco to help develop two non-profits and get a taste of the good life (social good that is).
Ashkun chose to study at USC's Marshall School of Business as a fellow of the Brittingham Social Enterprise Lab. Through a close relationship with a professor, Ashkun met the founder of EcoMedia, a division of CBS that turns traditional advertising dollars into funding for non-profits addressing critical needs in education, the environment, health/wellness, and Veterans’ affairs, all while generating goodwill and creating a lasting legacy for the advertiser. A summer internship turned into a dream job, and he now serves as the Director of Finance, Strategy, and Operations, doing a little bit of everything and helping EcoMedia introduce new and innovative products that are further transforming the advertising industry by turning it into an engine for social good. He and Neelam reside in sunny Hermosa Beach and are glad and grateful to be invited back each year to speak at Man Econ Career-Alumni Day.
